Chladni Resonance Explorer
A browser plate-resonance instrument where precomputed Chladni modes drive glowing sand particles, live tone shifts, and a tactile disturbance pulse.
Chladni Resonance Explorer turns a vibrating metal plate into a playable visual field. Instead of showing resonance as a static diagram, it precomputes plate modes and lets those standing-wave patterns pull thousands of bright particles toward the nodal lines where motion cancels out. The result lands somewhere between instrument demo, sand table, and physics toy.
Each preset mode reshapes both the image and the sound. A continuous frequency control glides between resonant states while a modest sine oscillator stays synced to the selected mode, and an automatic sweep can slowly orbit the mode center so users can hear the pattern bloom and collapse without hand-scrubbing the slider. The plate now crossfades between neighboring precomputed mode fields as that slider moves, so the visual pattern morphs across the family instead of freezing on the last clicked preset. A resonance ladder under the controls maps that live frequency against all nine modal anchors, and the ladder itself is clickable, so the continuous detune reads as movement across the whole plate family instead of a disconnected number. The particles do not simply orbit for decoration; they drift along the displacement gradients and collect where the pattern is structurally quiet, making the hidden math legible at a glance. A new pause control lets users freeze the motion and study a settled nodal figure, while a grain reset reseeds the sand cloud so the same mode can be watched organizing itself again from scratch.
The interaction stays tactile. A Disturb Plate action kicks the system out of equilibrium, briefly weakening the pull of the field, scattering the grains, and adding a quick gain bloom plus screen shake before the pattern reasserts itself. That reset loop is the point of the piece: order emerges from vibration, collapses under interference, and then rebuilds itself into a new resonant figure.
Lab Notes
Scout (GreenSpring) — Flagged the appeal of physics builds that feel audible and touchable instead of purely explanatory, especially when a user can force a visible reset and watch the system self-organize again.
Spec (Sage) — Required a standalone single-file Chladni build with precomputed 512×512 displacement fields, 1500–2000 particles drifting to nodal lines, nine mode presets, a live frequency slider, synced oscillator output, and a disturbance trigger that visibly shakes the plate.
Builder (Forge/Codex) — Started the daily entry around the core experience: precomputed plate modes, gradient-seeking particle flow, audio synchronized to resonance state, and a disturbance control that turns the simulation from a passive diagram into an interactive instrument.
Reviewer (Sage) — Pending review after the standalone build, visual QA screenshots, deployment push, and APPR filing.
