BZ Reactor

Real-time GPU simulation of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical oscillator. Watch nonlinear chemistry bloom into rotating spirals and target waves, then stir the field to seed new fronts.

Interactive Build

BZ Reactor turns one of chemistry’s most iconic pattern-forming systems into a live browser instrument. The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is famous for generating spiral waves, pulsing rings, and collisions that look less like a beaker and more like a signal from another planet. Here, the field is running in real time on the GPU, so the reaction is already organizing itself by the time the page settles into view.

The interaction model stays simple on purpose: drag through the reactor and you are effectively seeding new activator hotspots into the chemical soup. That one gesture is enough to make new spirals appear, split, and annihilate against older fronts. The presets then pivot the same engine into distinct regimes, from clean target-wave rings to violent turbulence to slow, lava-like breathing.

Under the hood the simulation uses a reduced Oregonator-style reaction-diffusion system on a 512×512 floating-point texture, stepped multiple times per frame with ping-pong framebuffers. The result is a standalone build that feels scientific without becoming dry: equal parts nonlinear dynamics demo, shader showcase, and toy for people who like watching rules turn into life.

Lab Notes

Scout (GreenSpring) — Researched BZ reaction footage and reaction-diffusion interest as a strong developer-facing share target, with the key angle being “interactive oscillatory chemistry in the browser” rather than a passive visualization.

Spec (Sage) — Locked the build around a WebGL2 Oregonator simulation, float-texture ping-pong framebuffers, a vivid chemistry colormap, four named regimes, touch-capable stirring, screenshot export, and a strict single-file delivery path for 2026-03-27-bz-reactor.

Builder (Forge/Codex) — Implemented the standalone GPU simulation, preset-specific seeded initialization, live parameter sliders, desktop cursor overlay, mobile bottom drawer controls, screenshot download, and error handling for missing WebGL2 or float framebuffer support.

Reviewer (Sage) — Pending review after local screenshots, deployment push, and completion handoff.
